SL003  Small Format Interchangeable Core (P) L-38            Instructor:  Bill Lynk, CRL

This class covers the principles and techniques applying to most Small Format Interchangeable Cores including, Arrow, Arrow Flexcore, Arrow Choice, Best, Best Premium, Falcon, Kaba Peaks, KSP,  Medeco KeyMark, Yale KeyMark, Schlage Everest, Ultra and Sargent XC.  Product characteristics related to construction, operation and rekeying are discussed, explained and shown by exploded views and sample cores.  These are important products for commercial and institutional applications.

Students will learn to select TMK's (Top Master Keys) and control keys, calculate pinning for A2, A3 and A4 systems, write and apply system specific pinning charts, and measure keys to determine which increment system has been used.

Students will examine the cores mentioned above, as well as construct an A2 system pinning chart and pin a core according to that chart.  Students will execute exercises in decoding cores, combinating cores and manipulating cores.  Manufacturer-specific details will be presented.  Information on Small Format Interchangeable Core specific tools and troubleshooting will also be addressed.

Prerequisite: The student must have a solid understanding of basic master keying .

Materials to bring to class:  tweezers, plastic or rawhide mallet and key caliper/micrometer.

The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L-38.  ALOA members who register and pay the additional fee may take the PRP test L-38 at the end of class.
